Creating a Skin Care Routine for Your Body
If you’re adding body care products to your skin care routine, it’s a good idea to use a product specifically designed for the body. In general, these products are formulated to be more emollient than their facial counterparts. The average person’s skin is thicker than facial skin, so it may require a little extra help moisturizing.
To choose the right body care product for your skin type and tone, look for one that has ingredients that will benefit your specific needs.
A number of different formulas exist, but in general they tend to fall into three main categories: nourishing/moisturizing, exfoliating and self-tanners. Most people find that using one or more of these types of products helps them achieve smoother and more radiant-looking skin on both their face and the rest of their bodies.
Get a loofah or washcloth.
- Get a loofah or washcloth. There is no point in having a loofah if you are going to use it once and then never again, so make sure that this becomes a regular addition to your routine.
- Use the right amount of pressure when you exfoliate. If you are too hard on your skin you will irritate it, causing tiny cuts that can open up the door for nasty things like staph infections. Don’t be afraid to scrub off any dead skin either, as that’s what helps speed the healing process along!
Wash your body when you shower.
There are two ways to cleanse your body:
- Body wash. Lather a small amount of body wash in your hands and use it to wash your entire body, including your feet, back, and neck. Rinse with slightly cool water to close your pores.
- Body scrub. Use a loofah or washcloth to gently exfoliate while showering using a body scrub. Focus on the backs of the arms, shins, chest, back and sides of the torso. Rinse with slightly cool water to close your pores.
Apply body lotion right after you shower.
A lot of people make the mistake of using body lotion only a few times a year, like if they’re feeling dry or going to a fancy event. But your body needs moisture every single day. It’s best to apply it right after you shower, when your skin is still damp and can hold in more moisture. And don’t forget: your whole body deserves attention! Make sure to apply body lotion to all the areas that commonly get dry and need extra love, including the backs of your hands, elbows and feet.

Try adding this routine to your daily beauty routine.
At the end of your shower or bath, pat yourself dry with a towel. Once you’re dry, it’s time to apply.
Go in with body lotion first. Body lotion is a lighter formula, so it will moisturize without making skin feel too greasy. Apply it all over—from your neck to the tips of your toes.
Once the body lotion has absorbed, apply a thick cream on any areas that need more moisture (usually hands and feet). Creams are thicker and richer than lotions, so they provide an extra dose of hydration where you need it most.
Use this same routine every day after you get out of the shower to keep your skin feeling smooth and hydrated.
If you want to take things up a notch, try using a loofah or a washcloth in the shower or bath for gentle exfoliation that’ll help smooth out rough spots (like elbows). Just make sure you let them dry between uses so no bacteria grows on them. And then be sure to replace them frequently—about once a month for loofahs and every couple weeks if you’re using washcloths.
