The Effects of Stress on Your Skin
You might not think that stress has any effect on your skin, but it actually does! Stress causes you to produce too much of a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol can interfere with the cells at the base of your hair follicle, which makes them shrink and prevents hair from growing. This also has an effect on other parts of your body — like your immune system.
Cortisol can also cause acne breakouts and eczema because it prompts oil glands in our skin to produce more oil. And because cortisol increases with stress, acne and eczema also tend to get worse as you get older. Stress can also lead to symptoms like facial redness, eyelid swelling, and dark circles.
To calm inflammation and fight these negative effects of stress on your skin, try these things in your diet:
• Eat healthy foods like nuts, fish, sweet potatoes (but not potatoes!), bananas, and other high-quality carbs. Avoid fatty or processed foods that can make you break out or increase inflammation. Decide on your diet and stick to it.
• Take a multivitamin and biotin, which helps your body produce less cortisol. It also helps your skin cells grow stronger. Biotin is one of the vitamin B’s. It’s especially good for skin because it can help you make more collagen and elastin, proteins that allow your skin to stay strong and wrinkle-free.
With healthy diet you also need good skin care routine. Here are some tips:
• Moisturize with a non-comedogenic moisturizer like hyaluronic acid moisturizer prefer those which are in form of gel as they are easy to spread and are non-sticky. The skin absorbs the hyaluronic acid and subsequently your face looks matte as well as smooth.
• Use a sunscreen with PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) or zinc oxide to protect your skin from sun damage. Zinc oxide is a natural chemical that repairs skin cells. It also has antioxidant properties. Both, PABA and zinc oxide protect your skin from tanning
• Avoid using harsh soaps and harsh scrubs because they can strip your skin of healthy oils and cause irritation. Switch them with gentle cleansers and exfoliants. You can prefer those face wash or scrubs which contains anti-oxidants as it will help you to have healthy skin.
• Use only a mild exfoliant twice a week — neutriherbs AHA serum. If you have dry skin, exfoliate twice a week. If you have oily or normal skin, once every two weeks is fine. An AHA serum exfoliator helps to unclog pores, dissolve blackheads, and reduce dullness.
• Try to avoid stress as much as possible — even if it means taking some time to yourself or meditating before you go to sleep. Applying mask hydrating packs to your face before and after exercise or even just a long day can help reduce inflammation and decrease the effects of stress and cortisol.
• Washing your face with cold water also helps reduce the effects of cortisol. Cold water’s dilatory effect causes your skin to produce fewer natural oils that give you shine and stickiness.
