How to protect your mouth from too much sun exposure?
Sunburn on the lips: It doesn’t matter whether you’re skiing or sunbathing – your skin needs protection from too much sunlight. This also applies to your lips, which are also at risk of sunburn. We tell you how you can relieve sunburn on your lips.
Even if it sounds strange initially, sunburn can also occur on the lips. The skin of the lips is susceptible and does not form any protective melanin. That’s why the lips don’t turn brown—the fuller the lips, the greater the risk of sunburn.
The lower lip, in particular, is constantly exposed to the sun and is, therefore, particularly at risk. Burnt lips not only look ugly, but sunburn is also very uncomfortable and painful. And like the rest of the skin, sunburn on the lip can also lead to skin cancer. Therefore, you should try to avoid sunburn on your lips.
However, if it is too late to take preventive measures, you can combat the burn with simple tricks.
Sunburn on the lips – the symptoms
Depending on how severe the sunburn is, it shows itself through different symptoms. Red and chapped lips are a sign of sunburn. More severe burns are indicated by blisters on the lip, among other things. If you have blisters on your lips, they will mostly be cold sores. However, it can also be triggered by sunburn.
If it “got” you, you may feel hardening or swelling on your lip. Cracked corners of the mouth are also an indication of a burn. However, they do not occur alone but in combination with the other symptoms. Typically, the symptoms go away after a few days. Otherwise, it would help if you went to the doctor.
This helps against sunburn on the lip
As with any burn, two things are significant: Keep burned skin cool and drink plenty of water. This allows you to rebalance the skin’s fluid balance. A straw is helpful if drinking from a glass is too uncomfortable due to sunburn.
Do not use ice cubes to cool yourself down, as they further irritate your skin. This can make inflammation worse. It is better to use a tried-and-tested home remedy for sunburn: quark. Mix cottage cheese with a bit of honey and apply this mixture to burned lips several times a day. As soon as the quark is no more extended cooling, you can carefully remove it with a cloth.
Alternative to antibiotics? One type of honey destroys stubborn pathogens. Aloe vera also has a cooling effect. Unfortunately, when you get sunburned, your skin often peels off. This is no different on the lips, but it cannot be prevented. This “peeling” is part of the natural healing process. The dead skin has to slough off so that new, healthy skin can grow underneath. Moisturizing lip creams help at least a little. So you can hide the sunburn
In general, a sunburn is not easy to hide, especially when the skin is swollen. Putting makeup on your lips is generally not ideal because it can further irritate the skin. However, women can distract themselves from burnt lips with skillful makeup.
Make up your eyes more conspicuously than usual, perhaps with a colored eyeshadow or Smokey Eyes. This draws the other person’s gaze more towards the eyes and away from the lips. A tinted lip balm is something you can work with when the skin starts to peel. It is best to use allergen-free products for sensitive skin, so the lip skin is not further irritated.
How to protect lips from sunburn
Of course, it’s always better if you don’t let it get that far in the first place. Protect your lips, like the rest of your skin, with sunscreen. There are lip balms or lipsticks with a sun protection factor on the market.
Choose a product with the highest possible sun protection factor and without paraffin. You should refresh this lip balm occasionally because it won’t stay on your lips long if you drink or lick it.
